Voice acting is also excellent in Origins. (Sagi is a stupid name though, I guess Origins isn't perfect). But man Origins really gets to dig into the dynamic of the 3 in Origins, really the only characters from the original that come close to what we get in Origins is Kalas, and maybe Xelha. Its a JRPG staple to begin with, and its just a more diverse group, more wider array of character types to bounce off of and for the player to enjoy. A lot of people are obviously going to prefer a bigger party. They're just inherently more fleshed out since there's less of them (and its a more character focused story to boot). I like the main 3 characters more in Origins. I think the plot ends up overall more compelling moment to moment revelations, compared to the original's slow build leading to the craziest reveal. The story never tries something quite as game changing as the twist from the original game, but it does still manage to pull stuff off some pretty original things in it's plot. Just crazy attention to detail on the writers to find a way to make that cohesive.
Replaying the first game and seeing Melodia name drop the Dark Brethren is nutty. With one kind of notable exception where the hell did Hassaleh go? I was just really impressed how satisfyingly things are set up and connect between the two despite in reality the first game having no idea about the prequel. The prequel adds fills out a lot of deep lore about the world that made going back to the original game afterward feel even better, which I think is the best thing a prequel can do. But man I really like how well the prequel compliments it. First game was done without any intention of a prequel existing so the prequel can't do anything that the first game 'needs'.
So for the story, obviously it didn't need to be told. Origins does some things better, somethings different, and some things worse, so there isn't a clear winner. I've been meaning to get my gamecube back out forever and replay them (or hey Monolith, give us a rerelease). I'm not sure which one I'd pick out as the better overall game.
